Virtual Book Restoration

The goal of the workshop is to introduce participants to the basic materials and steps employed in most book repair work all from the comfort and safety of their own home. Participants will be virtually taught basic book repair techniques, and in the process learn about the book’s components and traditional hand bookbinding methods. Participants will deconstruct the book by removing the textblock from the front coverboard and spine; scrape off glue and any lining from the exposed spine; remove several signatures; perform paper repair; resew the book; and reattach the front coverboard and spine.

Virtual Book Sewing

In this class, participants will be introduced to sewing techniques not taught in the Bookbinding I class. Participants will hand-sew book signatures together with specialized sewing techniques: French Link Stitch, Herringbone and Double Needle Coptic Stitch all from the comfort and safety of their own home. The class will last three to four hours.

Virtual Bookbinding Level I

The goal of the class is to introduce you to the traditional methods of creating a book all from the comfort and safety of your own home. These methods have been employed from about the first century through the mid-19th-century. You will hand-sew the book sections (signatures); secure the hard covers; add a leather spine, and decorative paper to the covers; and lay down the endpapers in this process. The class will last approximately 5 hours.

Virtual Bookbinding Level II

The goal of the Level II Bookbinding Workshop is to complete your knowledge of the traditional methods of creating a book, employed from about the first century through the mid-19th-century. In this workshop, you will make a full leather binding, and will be taught steps such as Rounding, Backing and Headbanding. The class will last approximately 5 hours.
